California Firearm Purchasing & Store Policies

Firearm ownership and transfers in California are subject to strict federal and state regulations. Gun Attic Customs is required to follow all applicable laws. Please review the information below before purchasing, transferring, or picking up a firearm.


Firearm Purchasing Requirements (California)

The following requirements apply to all firearms manufactured after 1898 that fire fixed cartridges, as well as certain modern muzzle loaders.

Valid Identification

You must present a valid California Real ID or California Driver’s License.

If your ID or Driver’s License states “Federal Limits Apply,” you must also provide one of the following:

  • Valid U.S. Passport

  • Birth Certificate

The name on all documents must match exactly.


Ten (10) Day Waiting Period

California law requires a mandatory 10-day waiting period before a firearm can be released.


Background Check & DROS Fee

  • Background check and firearm registration fee: $37.19 (non-refundable)


Eligibility

You must have:

  • A clean criminal record

  • No disqualifying mental health history


Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC)

Most buyers are required to obtain a Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC).

  • 30-question test taken in store

  • Fee: $25

  • Valid for 5 years

FSC Exemptions

The FSC is not required if you qualify under one of the following exemptions:

  • Active or retired peace officer

  • Active or retired military

  • Guard Card (Peculiar and Limited Authority Peace Officer)

  • Valid California Concealed Carry Permit (out-of-state CCWs are not recognized)

  • Certified firearms instructor

  • Federal Firearms License (FFL) holder

  • For long guns only: valid California hunting license


Proof of Residency (Handgun Purchases)

All handgun purchases require proof of California residency. Acceptable documents include:

  • DMV vehicle registration

  • Current rental or lease agreement

  • Utility bill dated within the last 90 days

  • Property deed

  • California-issued license with expiration date

  • Valid annual California hunting or fishing license

If your current address does not match your California ID or Driver’s License, proof of residency is required for all firearm purchases.


Firearm Pickup & Safety Demonstration

At pickup, customers must complete a mandatory safety demonstration and present required locking devices. A right thumbprint will be taken in store.


Pickup Time Limits & Storage Fees

  • Firearms must be picked up within 30 days

  • After 30 days:

    • DOJ paperwork must be resubmitted

    • Additional $47.19 fee applies

    • $5.00 per day storage fee


Purchase Limits

Only one new handgun or centerfire rifle may be purchased every 30 days. This restriction does not apply to shotguns or rimfire rifles.


Background Check Outcomes

If a buyer fails or receives an undetermined status, applicable fees and refund rules apply as outlined by California DOJ.


Military Personnel Stationed in California

Required documentation includes out-of-state ID, military ID, and official orders.


Private Party Transfers (PPT)

Accepted before 3:00 PM only. Fees apply.


Magazine Requirements

California-compliant magazines are required for applicable transfers.
